The Importance of Linen
"Those who dwell among the beauties and mysteries of the earth are never alone or weary of life. Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe, the less taste we shall have for destruction." Rachel Carson
Made from the fibers of the flax plant, linen textiles are some of the oldest in the world, dating back to ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.
Because the flax plant is native to many regions around the world - from Northern Africa to India to Western Europe - linen has its roots and history in a variety of cultures. In the 16th century, linen textiles exploded in popularity and flax cultivation and production became widespread. In recent years as the popularity of sustainable and ethically-minded fashion brands has grown, linen has experienced a bit of a resurgence. Normandy, France and Belgium are considered to have the best climates for growing the flax plant as both countries cooler climates are ideal for the cultivation and controlled decomposition of the “woody” plant.
The linen we source for SCM is grown in Belgium and finished in the USA. We have decided to invest in natural fibers because of their lower environmental impact and longevity.
